Fun day planned May 27 for parents and children to discover Island family services

Developmental screening a part of the offering

M’CHIGEENG—The Manitoulin Service Provider Network (MSPN) is comprised of several organizations on Manitoulin whose services are important to parents and their children, but many caregivers may not be aware of how or where to access those services. On Saturday, May 27 MSPN has prepared a fun-filled day full of games and prizes to help attract caregivers and children.

“We represent a number of different services for children aged zero to 18,” said organizer Katherine McQuarrie, who explained that, like many such gatherings, MSPN Family Fun Screening Day was put on hiatus during the pandemic. “But now we are back and ready to assist people in accessing the services they need.”

There will be developmental screening booths set up on site from 10 am to 3 pm on May 27 at Manitoulin Secondary School, as well as booths from the many service providers offering services on Manitoulin Island.

“We have three bicycles to give away as prizes and gift cards,” said Ms. McQuarrie, who noted that the popular ‘Popup Play’ children’s activities will be onsite, as will firefighters and their trucks from a number of Island municipalities. Public Health Sudbury and Districts will be hosting a bike safety course and assisting with proper helmet fittings, as well as an obstacle course.

“The hope is that by providing lots of fun things for families to do they will come out and learn more about the services available on Manitoulin and how to access them,” said Ms. McQuarrie. “People don’t realize how easy it is to set up speech assessment, for example.”

There will also be a free barbecue.

MSPN invites caregivers and their charges to pop down and check out all there is on offer to help assist with parenting and ensuring children have the best start in life possible.
