Team Fermeijer

At the time of writing, Team Fergmeijer is dreaming of bear claws, forget-me-nots, and chocolate cupcakes. Of course, we always have chocolate on the brain this time of year; we love May a choco-lot. If May had a theme song it would be Wake Me Up Before You Cocoa. All we’re saying is, don’t get between the two of us, and our chocolate fix. When it comes to chocolate, we are not to be truffled with!

A number of stalwart tennis players braved the blackflies this past weekend at the aptly-named Blackfly tournament hosted by the Manitoulin Tennis Club. With this kick-off event, drop-in tennis will soon be up and running at the tennis courts in M’Chigeeng, and all will be welcome. Visit Manitoulin Tennis Club on Facebook for more information.

Manitoulin Metal wants to show their appreciation for all the community support they received this year, and what better way to show gratitude than with pancakes! June 1st, the team will be serving up breakfast for dinner at MSS from 6 to 8 pm. Meet the team over pancakes, sausages and hashbrowns; check out Bumblebee the robot, watch demos, check out the silent auction and take part in interactive activities.

We saw a snapping turtle outside the museum. We still have no idea how he got hold of that camera.

It’s impossible to be negative about the Old Mill Heritage Centre’s new exhibit that focusses on vintage cameras. We spoke with one visitor who was so excited about the display that we just couldn’t shutter up on the subject.

Go fly a kite! No, really. On Sunday June 4 in Gore Bay you can go fly a kite in the Kite Festival! From 1 to 4 pm you can enjoy kite-flying at the Western Manitoulin Community Garden. It’s a free event and fun can be had for all ages. Enjoy the barbecue lunch, get crafty at the Make a Scarecrow station, and check out a Pop-up Play area for the littles. There will also be community service people and their vehicles for viewing and questions. Bring your own kite or use one the festival provides.

Candice Irwin of Body Stories Dance Instruction will be hosting drop-in dance classes for children throughout the month of June at the Kagawong Park Centre. Happy Birthday to David H and Erin F who are both turning 29 this week. It can be tempting to feel bad about getting older, but remember, birthdays are to be cherished as a reminder that you are still alive and cake-ing!

The waterline work on Old Mill Road has started. That road will be closed as the work requires excavation of the roadway to install a new water main and service connections. Residents will have access to their property but may have to use Newburn Road via Graham’s Hill at times.

Fun fact: A camera takes photos, but a sock takes five. Have a great week!

Meldrum Bay

We are preparing for the quad run that is on Saturday. The hall is getting ready. Food is getting prepared. So much is happening that the card game that usually occurs on Friday nights was cancelled. The weather is predicting rain but if not too hard a rain this is not terrible as it will prevent the route from being too dusty. Hopefully everyone has a great time. There are areas opened to the quad run that are normally not easily accessible. There is lots of food and great prizes.

Sunday is an important day as well. It will be the interment of Joan VanEvery. Family and friends will gather to give our respects to a person who we all loved and admired.

Sunday is also the first service of the season at the Meldrum Bay United Church.

There was another workday this week at the waterfront and now all the main docks are in place. The store has its hot dog stand set up outside and serving hot dogs.

It has been quite cool all week, but I have still been putting a lot of work into preparing the garden. The rhubarb, kale and asparagus are growing well. The strawberries, cherries and pears are in flower. Hopefully all those flowers turn into lots of juicy sweet fruit.

To all who joined us for a great weekend, thanks very much for coming.

Silver Water

I took a carload of people to euchre in Meldrum Bay on Friday, May 5. We had a great time but no one had a high enough score to win the money jar.

Saturday, May 6, we had a market in our yard. We had lots of people but still have lots of items for sale with the proceeds for the Silver Water Community Hall. We are having 50/50 draws at the markets and at the recycle bins days all summer.

The recycle bins were open on Monday, May 8. We had a lot of people come out.

Several of us went to euchre in Burpee on Monday, May 8 and Monday, May 15. They are having five or more tables each week. Thanks to all the players coming out to help them fundraise.

Euchre was held in Silver Water on Thursday, May 11 at 7 pm. The attendance is increasing now that everyone is getting over their colds.

I went to euchre with some neighbours on Friday, May 12 in Meldrum Bay.

The second market was held on May 13. At the same time, Lori Walker had a big yard sale at 20515 Hwy 540. The tables were left set up and the sale was open again on May 20.

Congratulations to Iris and Keith Clarke’s son, Ryan and new daughter-in-law Kate Adams who were married on May 13 in Espanola.

Kate Duncanson and husband Chip Tomisch travelled from Geraldton to attend Ryan’s wedding. They came to Silver Water to stay with her mother, Myra, for a few days and left on Thursday, May 18.

I hope everyone had a Happy Mother’s Day. We had Doug and Brenda Carter and Anne Boyd over for supper. I heard that Stop 540 had a great crowd and the food was terrific.

Brenda Carter and I have continued to walk along the roads picking up cans and bottles. The grass is starting to get too tall to allow us to spot everything, but we do our best. We are saving all the pop cans to crush and turn in for the price of the metal. Gladys Duncanson has been doing short walks every day, so the three of us will be back to walking together soon.

Joe Addison was at his cottage for several days.

Paul and Diane McCallum are at their cottage.

Mike and Brenda Swank have arrived at their cottage in Elizabeth Bay for the summer.

We have had lots of asparagus in the last week and there is enough to share with some of the neighbours.

Happy 100th birthday to Edith Best on May 12.

Happy 80th birthday to Lyle Addison on May 19.

Condolences to the family of Bordie Noble.

Condolences to the family of Skye Giffin.
