Manitoulin Secondary School returns to the stage with ‘Something Rotten’

M’CHIGEENG—The stage at Manitoulin Secondary School was filled with motion and song as student thespians were taken through their paces by director Chris  Theijsmeijer after school on Wednesday, February 15. Although opening night still remains a few weeks off, the students were exhibiting a confidence and poise that belies their youth.

Of course, MSS students are known for their excellent executions of the musical genre and, judging by the rehearsal observed by The Expositor on Wednesday, this year’s performance of the Broadway adaptation of ‘Something Rotten’ seems destined to continue that tradition.

‘Something Rotten’ is a musical comedy based on a book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick with music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Set in 1595, the story follows the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, who are struggling to find success in the theatrical world as they compete with the wild popularity of their contemporary William Shakespeare. Hilarity ensues.

Mustangs in leading roles are Jocelyn Kuntsi as Nick Bottom, Jordan Goddard as Nigel Bottom and Zack Hill as Will Shakespeare.

‘Something Rotten’ is coming to the MSS stage on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4 at 7 pm, with a matinee performance taking place on Sunday, March 5 at 2 pm. Tickets are $20 and available at Little Current, Mindemoya and Manitowaning Guardian Pharmacies, as well as the IDA and Betty’s Convenience Store in Gore Bay.
