Curling Club hosts viewing party!

If anyone is interested in watching the Northern Ontario Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships this week, the Providence Bay Curling Club is hosting a watch party. The games are being livestreamed on YouTube!

Good luck to locals, Kyle and Jordan Chandler and Team Jacobs! Having a bye, Skip Brad Jacobs doesn’t play until this evening (January 25) just after the opening ceremonies. They should be on the ice by 7:30 pm. They will play the winner of the match up with the recent rival Sandy MacEwan rink and the Carr side. Many will remember Sandy, who taught here on the Island.

Local Wolf Wins Gold!

Congratulations to Brooke Gibeault and her SLW U18 B team who brought home gold from the Cambridge Roadrunners tournaments after 6 straight wins!

Winterfest full!

The excitement of the BJ Corbiere Memorial hockey tournament over the weekend must have paid off as the Little Current Lions are pleased to announce that they have a full roster of sportsmen teams for the upcoming Winterfest Weekend hockey tournament, February 3-5. The tournament also boasts women’s and old-timer’s play. It will be worth the price of admission!

The Little Current Curling Club is getting in on the fun Saturday morning, February 4, at 10 am with a ‘Try Curling’ event.

The Manitoulin Nordic Ski Club, conditions permitting, is also offering a ‘Try our Trails’ weekend.

There are other great Winterfest offerings in the works, too, so please see the centre-spread in next week’s paper.

Ontario Ice Fishing Challenge

Manitoulin Streams is promoting a fun opportunity to get out with the family this February! You can sign up for the Ontario Ice Fishing Challenge for only $20 and you could have the chance to win upwards of $1,000! Seija Deschenes of Manitoulin Streams reminds us all that with the cold weather coming in soon the lakes should be freezing up nice but remember to stay safe and check ice conditions.

The challenge goes right through the month of February, starting next Wednesday. The event is a catch, picture, measure, release tournament. There are additional prizes and draws showing the healthy release of a fish but this is not required. There are over 20 different prizes and region specific one that groups or businesses can sponsor, including Manitoulin sponsors Explore Manitoulin, Wiikwemkoong Anglers and Wikwemikong Tourism which have ponied up for three underwater cameras!

There are a few hoops to jump through and a fairly extensive list of rules but there are video tutorials to help you through it. Visit

AnglersAtlas.com. You will of course also need a measuring tape or ‘bump board’ for the picture and a mobile device to upload the MyCatch app. They promise not to ever give up your secret fishing spot! All that plus 20 bucks and you are good to go. Good luck!

Catching Up

I was able to touch base with a hockey player with deep Manitoulin roots recently. Mark Aljoe, son of Trace Aljoe, one half of the formidable Aljoe twins back in the day when the Manitoulin Panthers were born. Mark is playing hockey in the Western Ontario Senior AA men’s league for the Durham Thundercats. The young sniper known as Mark ‘the shark’ has come full circle for the family since his Dad also did. Mark is known by his teammates to be that player that will fly under the radar until bam, shark bite!

Proud papa Trace was only telling me all about Mark’s accomplishments so afterwards I did a little searching on the old guy. I knew he played for the Thundercats and in his ‘93-‘94 season they won the league title. Always humble, Trace never said that he sniped 31 points in only 15 games that season! Like Father, like son!

A good sport is good for sports.
