AOK hockey phenom named to Canada East World Junior A Challenge hockey selection camp

LITTLE CURRENT—Hockey Canada, in conjunction with the Canadian Junior Hockey League has announced that Greater Sudbury Cubs forward Samuel Assinewai of Aundeck Omni Kaning (AOK) has been named to take part in the Team Canada East Selection Camp, to vie for a roster spot in the upcoming World Junior A Challenge in Cornwall.

“It’s going to be a big week coming up,” stated Mr. Assinewai. “I’m looking forward to it.”

The 18-year-old AOK product will be among 32 Canada East hopefuls competing in the three-day camp, which runs December 5-7 in Cornwall.

Playing at an over a point-per-game clip for the Sudbury Cubs in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action so far this season, Mr. Assinewai has produced 15 to date with Greater Sudbury, with five goals and ten assists in 11 outings. Two of his goals tallies have been game-winners.

Samuel is also riding an eight-game point streak in NOJHL play after notching a goal and two assists in the Cubs home game December 1 versus the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.

Samuel, who started the season (his second) with the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League had been disappointed he had not been getting much ice time. He noted that, “I’m playing a lot for the Cubs.”

“Team Canada only takes 22 players for the World Junior A Challenge,” said Samuel.

Once the squad is selected, Canada East will take part in the WJAC, December 11-18 in Cornwall, against Team Canada West, the United States, Sweden and Latvia.
