MANITOULIN—While some municipal elections saw no major changes for the position of mayor/reeve or councils on Manitoulin Island, others saw big changes in the municipal elections held on Monday night.
ASSIGINACK
In the municipality of Assiginack there has been a change at the top, with a new mayor having been elected.
Brenda Reid won the election, receiving 428 votes to 264 for long-time mayor Dave Ham. Ms. Reid had served as a councillor previously.
There was a total of 10 candidates running for one of four seats on council. Those candidates who will serve on council include Dwayne Elliott who received 472 votes, Janice Bowerman with 375 votes, incumbent Robert Maguire with 336 and Jennifer Hooper with 301. Other candidates included Dene Banger receiving 100 votes, Theodore Flikweert with 63, Christianna Jones 219, Frank Klodnicki with 156, Maureen Marion with 156 and Cheryl O’Brien McCulligh with 171.
BILLINGS
Billings Township incumbent councillor Bryan Barker was the only candidate who put his name forward for the position of mayor of the township, being acclaimed.
There were six candidates in the running for the four council seats. The new council will include Dave Hillyard with 381 votes, Michael Hunt with 359, Jim Cahill 301, and Vince Grogan with 186 votes. Two other candidates, Mike Larocque with 187 and Paul Darlaston received 186 votes.
BURPEE AND MILLS
For the Township of Burpee and Mills incumbent reeve Ken Noland was acclaimed for another term.
There was an election held for the four council positions with a total of 10 candidates in the running. The four candidates who will make up council include Art Hayden who was re-elected with 123 votes, Kim Middleton with 120, David Deeg with 92 and Roger Morrell with 84 votes. Also in the running were Nicole Middleton who had 24 votes, Ed Wright with 63, Mike Wright 31, Melanie Blain with 22 and Steve Dinsmore with 15.
CENTRAL MANITOULIN
There were three persons in the running for mayor of the municipality of Central Manitoulin. Incumbent Mayor Richard Stephens was re-elected for another term, receiving 503 votes. Maja Mielonen received 403 votes, with Steven Shaffer with 397.
There was an election held in ward three (Sandfield) with three candidates vying for two council seats. Filling the two council seats will be Linda Farquhar with 165 votes, and Rosemarie Diebolt with 141. Lois Middaugh Keller received 122 votes.
In ward one (Campbell), both candidates were acclaimed. Incumbent Derek Stephens will continue for another term and will be joined by newcomer Brian Mitchell. Both council positions in ward two (Carnarvon) were also acclaimed. Incumbent William Dale Scott will be filling a council seat for another term, while John Bisaillon will join him on council.
COCKBURN ISLAND
In Cockburn Island, Incumbent Mayor Brenda Jones was re-elected with 65 votes, narrowly beating out Robert Brown, who had 63 votes.
There was a total of seven people running for the four seats on council. Those who make up the council are Jeff House with 107 votes, Lee Chappell with 70 votes, Scott Stewart with 68, and Simon Lacombe with 62 votes. Other candidates included Richard Rintala with 57, Evan Papineau with 51, and Glen Cressman with 26 votes.
GORE BAY
The Town of Gore Bay had an election for both the position of mayor and councillor seats.
Ron Lane won the vote for Mayor, receiving 161 votes, with candidate Maureen Armstrong receiving a total of 100 votes.
There was a total of seven candidates in the running for the six Gore Bay council seats. Garnering a seat on council were Dan Osborne with 187 votes, Paulie Nodecker with 192, Leeanne Woestenenk with 207, Aaron Wright with 176, Kelly Chaytor with 181 and Terry Olmstead with 199 votes. Candidate Ken Blodgett received 143 votes.
KILLARNEY
For Killarney there was only one election, for a councillor in Ward one. There was a total of five person all having put their name in the hat for the three council positions in this ward. Those elected for council include Rob Campbell who received 222 votes, Dave Froats with 202, and Peggy Roque 194. Candidate Mike Green received and Doug Elliott received 88 votes.
Mayor Michael Reider was acclaimed as have ward two councillors, Nicola Grubic and Mary Bradbury.
NORTHEASTERN MANITOULIN AND THE ISLANDS
In the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) incumbent Mayor Al MacNevin was acclaimed, as was incumbent councillor Laurie Cook in ward one.
There was an election for ward two with three people elected from seven candidates. They include
Allan Boyd with 229 votes, Michael Erskine with 213, Bill Koehler with 232. Other candidates included Barbara Baker with 193, Elaine Milne 163, Zak Nicholls with 73 and Melissa Peters with 127.
For NEMI ward three George Williamson, who was running for the first time for council, was acclaimed.
In NEMI’s ward four three councillors were elected. Those elected included Patti Aelick with 294 votes, Dawn Orr with 248 and Bruce Wood with 260. Other candidates included Jim Ferguson who received 199 votes and Lee-Ann Ferguson with 132 votes.
TEHKUMMAH
There were elections for the position of reeve of Tehkummah Township and for the four seats on council.
John Deforge has been elected as reeve, having received a total of 281 votes to 83 for Eric Russell.
There was a total of seven candidates in the running for the four council seats. Those who will serve on council include Perry Chatwell who garnered 300 votes, Steve Wood with 233, incumbent Mike McKenzie with 199 and incumbent Lori Leeson with 161. Other candidates included Paul Bowerman with 110, Gerard Lyons with 157 and Rick Gordon with 116.
RDSB
Lisa Corbiere-Addison will be the new Rainbow District School Board trustee. Ms. Corbiere-Addison won with an official vote count of 2,221 with incumbent trustee Margaret Stringer receiving 2,104 votes.
