Manitoulin Ramsey Tour Show!
The annual Ramsey Tour races in Sudbury features a half marathon run and walk and 5K distances. I don’t believe any local people traversed the 21km-half, however there was a stellar contingent of Manitoulin runners in the five-K!
Bidwell’s Brodie Pennie at 15 years old ran a sub-18 minute (17:42) sprint to finish seventh overall and third in his, 15 – 16 year old division. Little Current’s Alan Wilkin was under 19 minutes, crossing the line in 18:54. Xavier Mara of Manitowaning, shot under the 20 minute barrier with a 19:51 on a hilly course. Rounding out the Manitoulin guys was Matthew Wilkin who had a great race in at 21:42.
Hailing from M’Chigeeng is Maren Kasunich, who led a trio of young Island women to finish in first, second and third in the 14– to 16-year-old women’s category. Maren blasted through the course under 20 with an elite, 19:44. Mackenzie Green was second and her sister Morgan was not far behind to take bronze.
Once again this group keep on improving their personal bests and finding out that they are in or near the front of the pack with anyone. The gang really does put in the effort and were guided once again by Coach Gerry Holliday. Keep up the good work, gang. Stay tuned for their cross country season!
Tennis wraps up with the Harvest
The Manitoulin Tennis Club is coming to the end of another great season of tennis. Why not get out and have one more swing before they close for the fall. The Harvest Tennis Tournament will happen this Saturday, September 17 at Manitoulin Secondary School at 9 am (with a rain day for Sunday if needed). No partner required, but singles and doubles will be available for everyone. Come with $5 to enter or bring some harvest from your local garden for entry, such as a quart of tomatoes, beans, or some cucumbers or squash. Congratulations to M’Chigeeng’s Nova Debassige who is looking to make a rep-volleyball team out of Sudbury, the U12 Northern Chill squad. This dedicated athlete has the desire and skill to just do it. She has one more try-out this weekend. Good luck. Unfortunately, no other Island girls are trying out so Nova could have someone else other than Mom and Dad to talk to during the long car rides! Keep up the hard work, Nova!
Pike Masters!
The Wiikwemkoong Anglers held the pike season derby this past weekend to crown the 2022 male and female Pike Masters. The weekend was a culmination of the 11 days of fishing since the season opened. When the competitive results were tallied it was very close. The 2022 Pike Master was Jeff Bailey (260 points) who edged Aaron Recollet by just two points who had edged Lorne Agawa! On the women’s side it was going to be hard to catch Lesley Recollet with her winning 252 pts. but Angela Peltier and Billie Abotosaway gave it a great try!
Pickleball Place!
In just a month’s time (October 15) the Manitoulin Pickleball Club’s ‘Summer-Play Season’ will conclude. The club would like to recognize the municipality of NEMI arena manager Reid Taylor and his crew for making the curling rink such a great place to play. Reid has been working on a number of improvements to the shared outdoor pickleball/tennis courts. To name a few, new nets, another set of energy saving court lights, repairs to the chain fence and a set of designated benches for players.
When it gets too cold to play in the rink or outdoors the club has permission to establish two indoor courts upstairs in the arena hall. A schedule for winter play will be posted on the Manitoulin Pickleball website. Members of the public 19 plus are welcome to come and see what the game of pickleball is about.
