RIDE program leads to impaired charges
On July 24 at approximately 1 am, the Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program, including the mandatory alcohol screening on Range Street in the town of Gore Bay.
A vehicle entered the RIDE program, and the driver registered a fail on the approved screening device. The driver was subsequently arrested, and the vehicle was towed and impounded.
Devin Wheale, 32, of Gore Bay was charged with operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs and operation while impaired, blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on September 14.
Traffic complaint leads to charges
At approximately 5:40 am on July 20, members of the Manitoulin OPP responded to a traffic complaint of a vehicle unable to maintain its lane on Highway 17 in Nairn-Hyman township.
Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Further investigation revealed that the driver of the motor vehicle was prohibited from driving and was subsequently arrested. Fentanyl, a digital scale and Canadian currency was located inside the vehicle. As a rest, three other occupants of the motor vehicle were arrested.
Alicia Babbington, 18, of East Gwillimbury was charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking, opioid (other than heroin).
Darren Manitowabi, 34, from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory was charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking, opioid (other than heroin).
A 15-year-old from Etobicoke was charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking, opioid (other than heroin).
The accused individuals are scheduled to appear before the Ontario court of justice in Espanola on September 12.
A 17-year-old from Scarborough was charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking, opioid (other than heroin), possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and operation while prohibited.
The accused individual was held for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody.
Disturbance call leads to impaired charges
On July 16, at approximately 11:30 pm the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP responded to a disturbance on Centre Street in the town of Espanola.
Investigation revealed that an intoxicated individual attempted to fight employees at a business. The individual had left the scene driving a motor vehicle. Officers were able to locate the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined they had consumed alcohol. An approved screening device was administered that resulted in a fail and the driver was subsequently arrested.
Michael Hall, 40, from Spring Bay was charged with operation while impaired, alcohol and drugs, and operation while impaired, blood alcohol concentration (80 plus). The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario court of justice in Espanola on August 22.
