MINDEMOYA—Two Mindemoya businesses, both owned my members of the same family, will be holding two fundraisers (over the next two Saturdays in August) to raise funds for two very worthy local causes.
“Jeff, the kids and I have been overwhelmed by the support and enthusiasm that has been shown to both our businesses,” said Jacqueline King. “We wanted to find a way to give back to this amazing community.”
Jeff and Jacqueline King own Island Time Boat Rentals, and their kids, August and Lily, own and operate Mindemoya Munchies (a concession stand across from the Lake Mindemoya public dock). “We have decided to organize a couple of fundraisers to help give back to the community that has welcomed and supported our businesses.”
Mindemoya Munchies sells a variety of snacks and treats. They carry ice cream novelties like drumsticks, ice cream sandwiches, popsicles and freezies, as well as hot snacks like hot dogs, pogos and pizza pops. They also have chocolate bars, chips and a variety of pop and Gatorade. They even have breakfast sandwiches and coffee for the Saturday morning crowd. August and Lily said they are, “really excited because we have partnered with mom and dad’s business to offer hourly rentals of non-motorized boats like kayaks and stand-up paddle boards at the Lake Mindemoya beach.”
“We have been spending our summers on the Island our whole lives,” said the youngsters. “Our dad is from here and all of our family lives here, so it feels like our home too. Last year, we spent a lot of time in the Mindemoya subdivision and drove by the empty kiosk building every day. Mom and dad joked that we should open a store, but we don’t think they realized that we might actually want to! This year we wanted to find a way to make some money, and we just kept thinking about that little empty building.”
“Our parents have owned their own business for a couple of years and this year Dad started Island Time Boat Rentals, so we wanted to see if we could run a business too,” said the youngsters. “Mom and dad encouraged us to try. They said we would learn a lot, no matter what happened. So far, it’s been pretty good. It pretty much depends on the weather, so we’re always hoping for hot sunny days! The people are really friendly and nice with us. It’s definitely been a great learning experience so far.”
A charity hot dog barbecue, benefiting the Manitoulin Family Resources Food Bank is taking place Sunday August 7 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Mindemoya Munchies Stand (across from the Mindemoya public boat launch, 10 Will-o-wisp way, Mindemoya). The barbecue hotdogs are $3 each (with sales being cash or e-transfer), and all proceeds will go to the food bank. Ms. King explained, “we are also collecting non-perishable food items and anyone who brings a food donation will be entered into a draw to win some fabulous prizes. So far, prizes include a stand-up paddle board rental from Island Time Boat Rentals, a round of golf from Brookwood Brae, fish and chips dinner from Rockin’ JJ’s Food Truck and a gift bag of “Do you Bake? Crave It” goodies from Gloria McAllister and an Epicure from Lily-Faith Hore.
There will also be a bouncy castle set up for the kids from J&S Backyard Party Rentals.
On Sunday August 14, from 10 am to 3 pm, a community bake sale benefitting the Manitoulin Pet Rescue will take place at Mindemoya Munchies. “In addition to all the delicious baking, we will be selling raffle tickets for a free one-day rental of our gorgeous Legend 21 Cruise Pontoon Boat,” said Ms. King.
