SUDBURY—Like so many nationwide, Manitowaning’s Cassie Kuntsi was distressed by the United States Supreme Court overturning of Roe vs. Wade, the historic 1973 Supreme Court case which ruled that the restrictive state regulation of abortion is unconstitutional.
On June 24 of this year, that same court overturned the ruling, stating that the United States Constitution “makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision…”
Protestors immediately took to the streets which moved Ms. Kuntsi to action. On Sunday, July 17, Ms. Kuntsi is helping to organize a Roe vs. Wade protest in Sudbury.
“This is an important cause to me as a woman, a daughter, a sister and a future mother because I believe that while humans have fought, protested and died for this cause almost 50 years ago, the Supreme Court of the United States has taken the free will that was earned and thrown it away,” Ms. Kuntsi told The Expositor. “This has created an understanding across the world that women in America are not worthy of their own lives; women in America are meant to be incubators without regard of their own safety or wellbeing; women in America do not deserve to make choices about their own bodies. The issue with this is that criminalizing abortions will not erase abortions. It makes abortions less safe for mothers who have to make what is a very difficult choice. It means that countless women will die trying to maintain their own bodily autonomy. This cannot be acceptable. We have grown as a civilization to become open minded, loving and accepting.”
This world, where the overturning of Roe v. Wade decision is allowed to go unanswered, a world where women do not have the basic human right to choose, this is not a world that I want to live in,” an emotional Ms. Kuntsi continued. “So I am standing in solidarity as part of a strong group of people so that women in America who are affected by this decision know that they are not alone in this fight.”
The Sudbury Roe vs. Wade protest will take place at Sudbury’s Bell Park on Sunday, July 17 beginning at 1 pm.
