MANITOULIN—As an important contributor to Manitoulin Island’s vibrant arts scene, 4elements Living Arts has been a beacon of creativity, sustainability and community engagement since its inception in 2002. However, the beloved non-profit organization finds itself at a critical juncture, facing the pressing need for new, active volunteers to ensure its continued operation, growth and impact.
“We’re wanting to be sure people are aware that we need more people to come on board,” said Susan Snelling, chair of 4elements. “We can’t continue with the same volunteers without more help, so we are putting this out now so people won’t be surprised if we say later down the line that we are done.”
“I would say we are certainly good for 2024, but after that we will need to see if we can continue with the numbers we have, unless we have more volunteer support,” said Ms. Snelling. “We still have Elemental Festival and workshops this year that will definitely be taking place.”
Founded by Sophie Edwards and colleagues in response to the need for creative spaces for artists and programming in our local communities, 4elements has been instrumental in nurturing the intersection of land, arts and community on Manitoulin Island. Through its innovative land-based arts initiatives, the organization has sparked inspiration, fostered collaboration and empowered individuals to connect with and protect their environment in meaningful ways, explained Ms. Snelling.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization,” stated Ms. Snelling. “Their dedication, passion and tireless efforts have fueled our ability to deliver transformative arts experiences and make a positive impact on our community. Many of those involved in 4elements leadership roles now are pulled in many directions, and as we look to the future, we urgently need new volunteers with fresh energy, ideas and perspectives based on their unique lived experiences to join us in our mission and ensure the vitality of our programs.”
Volunteers are needed for key leadership roles, ranging from finance, administration, fundraising, event coordination and outreach efforts to land stewardship, environmental sustainability, reconciliation initiatives and family-friendly programming; volunteers play a pivotal role in every facet of 4elements Living Arts’ operations, said Ms. Snelling. By contributing their time, skills and enthusiasm, volunteers not only support the organization’s day-to-day activities but also help shape its long-term vision and impact.
“Contributing to the future of 4elements is a rewarding opportunity. We welcome individuals of all ages from all backgrounds and skill sets to join our volunteer team,” said Ms. Snelling. “Whether you’re an artist, environmentalist, event planner, parent or simply someone passionate about making a difference, there’s a place for you at 4elements Living Arts. Together, we can contribute to cultivate creativity, sustainability and community connection.”
“We are looking for as many people to come forward as possible,” said Ms. Snelling. She pointed out the 4elements board includes four members but could have as many as eight. “But there are other ways people can volunteer and be involved, contributing here and there.”
In addition to its urgent call for volunteers, 4elements Living Arts invites residents and visitors alike to mark their calendars for the eagerly anticipated annual Elemental Festival, scheduled for September 20-22, on Manitoulin Island, in collaboration with NorthWords Festival. Building on the success of Elemental Festival 2023 headlined by celebrated Wiikwemkoong artist James Simon Mishibinijima, this year’s festival theme is ‘Pollination,’ where 4elements will deliver an immersive celebration of art, nature and culture exchange, highlighting the vital role of pollinators in sustaining life on earth.
From captivating performances and interactive workshops to thought-provoking installations and guided nature walks, Ms. Snelling said Elemental Festival offers something for everyone to enjoy and engage with. As a cornerstone event in Manitoulin Island’s cultural calendar, 4elements is proud to announce this year’s festival will be an official Ontario Culture Days event. 4element’s role as an Ontario Culture Days Hub is evidence of the power of art to inspire, unite and transform rural communities.
“We’re thrilled to unveil this year’s Elemental Festival and invite everyone to join us in exploring the theme of ‘Pollination,’” said Ms. Snelling. “It’s an opportunity to connect with each other and nature, ignite our imagination and deepen our understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings.
