Open Liquor Search Leads to Charge for Trafficking

ESPANOLA – On October 1, 2016 at 10:30 p.m., a member of the Espanola Police Service on patrol on Second Street observed a male and female standing on the sidewalk talking. The officer noticed that between them on the sidewalk was a can of beer, and stopped to speak to the two individuals. While engaging the male in conversation, the officer noted the odour of alcohol on the male’s breath, and determined that based on the cold partially filled can of beer at the male’s feet, and the odour of alcohol on his breath, that he was violating the Liquor Licence Act. The officer searched the male for additional alcohol, and in his back pack, the officer located an additional 8 unopened beers; a knife capable of being opened by centrifugal force; 5 Methamphetamine tablets; and indicia of trafficking in a controlled substance.

As a result of the incident, the 26-year old resident of Espanola was charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a weapon, and failing to comply with an undertaking. He was further charged under the Liquor Licence Act with having an open container of alcohol in a public place. He will appear in Espanola Court on November 7, 2016, to answer to his charges.

Spousal Assault

On September 29, 2016 at 2:20 p.m., the Espanola Police Service received a 911 call from the neighbor of a Tudhope Street couple, advising that it sounded like they were hurting one another.

Upon arrival, a member of the Espanola Police, assisted by members of the Espanola OPP, spoke to the 17-year old male and 17-year old female residing in the residence. Allegations were made by both parties that the other had assaulted them, including allegations from the female that the male had pointed a pellet gun at her resembling a semi-automatic pistol, and allegations from the male that the female had choked him, and held a large kitchen knife to him threatening to kill him. Both individuals had physical signs of being assaulted, and based on the fact that no clear aggressor could be determined, they were both arrested and charged with domestic related offences.

The 17-year old male was charged with spousal assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and fail to comply with a sentence order, for breaching a youth probation order. He will appear in Espanola Court on November 7, 2016, to answer to his charge.
