21st BJ Memorial Hockey Tournament scores with return

M’CHIGEENG—Like many Island winter events the BJ Memorial Hockey Tournament has been on hiatus for the last couple of years but this year the popular sports event roared back with a vengeance.

“We were happy to host five ladies, six sportsmen, and four men’s 40+ teams,” said organizer Dierdre Debassige. “It was exciting to fill the stands of M’Chigeeng arena once again after a long three years off. A special thank you to all of the organizers, sponsors, referees, timekeepers, arena management, players and fans for making the 21st annual hockey tournament a great success.”

Winners of the ladies’ Division were Earl’s Girls, who topped Get Er Done with a score of 3-0. Coaches Ruben Debassige, Earl Debassige, Deana Treena and Debbie Debassige saw the team of Kathryn Corbiere, Karlene Fox, Kristene Louise, Madyson Tellier, Victoria Pitawanakwat, Monica Dube, Steph Legault, Danielle Burla, Karli Shell, Danika Lefrancois, Ashley Gillies, Brooke Addison, (grandchildren of the late BJ Corbiere) and Deidre Debassige to capture the win.

The sportsmen division champs were the Kings, who won an exciting game versus the Red Rockets. The Kings consisted of Kurd Podlatis, Tyler King, Jordan Trudeau, Braeden Case, Justice Corbiere, Connor Gillis, Niibin Nashkawa, Griffin Simpson, Mitchal Payette, Hunter Chiblow, Thomas Hayden, Jordan Cristo, Cole King, Waas Nashkawa and Justin Lanktree.

The Men’s 40+ Division was won by the Black Pumas who scored over the No Regretszkies to take top honours. The Black Pumas included Bruce Recollet, Neil Jones, Perry Cuomo, Gerard Peltier, Jesse Peltier, Hawk Eshkawkogan, Tim Ominika, Ace Roque, Robert Sutherland, Darrel Assiniwe, Greg Mishinijimbima, Zeke Peltier, Jason Peltier, Joe Naokwegijig and Brad Webkamigad.

It looks like hockey is back on the ice, as this weekend’s Little Current Lions Winterfest tournament also had a full roster of games at the NEMI Recreation Centre arena.
